Despite a ban on direct flights from India that existed for more than five months in 2021, the number of Indian immigrants admitted to Canada is about to set a new record this year. With high living standards, job opportunities and social security benefits, Canada is attracting Indians in large number.
Indians form a major chunk of immigrants admitted to Canada every year. The COVID-19 had a serious impact on the number of Indians immigrating to Canada in 2020 and only 37125 Indians were admitted to the country that year. But by the end of August 2021 itself, the number of Indians becoming permanent residents in Canada reached 69014. This indicates that by the end of this year, the number will be crossing the all-time high of 84114, set in 2019.
India has been the biggest source country for permanent residents since 2017. However, the number Indians admitted to Canada increased by over 20% between 2018 and 2019. In 2019, Indians constituted almost one-fourth of the total number of immigrants admitted that year.
With Canada setting higher annual immigration targets for the coming two years, it is only logical to think that even more Indian immigrants will get a chance to migrate to Canada. The Immigration Levels Plan for 2021-23, with a total immigration target of 1.2 million, aims to compensate the shortfall of immigration in 2020 caused by travel restrictions.
While the previous Immigration Levels Plan targeted only 351,000 PRs for 2021 and 361,000 for 2022, they were increased to 401,000 and 411,000 respectively in the recent Immigration Levels Plan. The year 2023 has an even higher immigration target, which is 421,000. Almost 60% of these targeted immigrants will be admitted through the economic immigration programs of Canada. Over the past few years, this category has also been dominated by Indians.
Earlier, USA used to be the favourite immigration destination of Indian professionals. This situation changed when USA made their immigration policies stricter and more Indians started to choose the Great White North as their destination. Besides, Canada is fast becoming an international hub of IT, which has created a lot of job opportunities of IT workers from India. Other skilled workers like nurses, chefs, engineers and managers also have huge demand in Canada.
