Canada welcomed more than 64000 immigrants through sponsorship program for spouses, common-law partners and conjugal partners in 2021. Among these, the highest number of immigrants came from India. 10715 is the total number of Indian immigrants who received Canadian Permanent Residence status through spousal sponsorship in 2021. Second came the US with around 4810 spouses and partners from the country receiving Canadian PR. Third came Philippines, followed by China, Pakistan and Vietnam.
How to sponsor your spouse for Canada immigration?
In order to sponsor their spouse of life partner for permanent residence in Canada, a person must either be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. However, the potential sponsor and the person to be sponsored must meet certain eligibility requirements.
If the person to be sponsored is spouse, the sponsor must have married his or her spouse in an in-person ceremony. Virtual marriages will not be considered for the purpose of immigration.
If the person to be sponsored is a common-law partner, the sponsor and the sponsored persons must have lived together for at least 12 months.
If it is a conjugal partner, they must have been in that relationship for at least one year. They also need to demonstrate that there are no legal or social barriers that prevent them from getting married or living together. They must be living outside Canada. It is not possible to sponsor a partner living in Canada.
Eligibility requirements for the sponsor and the sponsored
To sponsor a spouse, a person must be at least 18 years old, besides being a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. They must also prove that they are not receiving any social assistance and are able to financially support their family.
Canadian citizens can sponsor their partners, even if they are applying from outside the country. However, they must demonstrate that they have the intention to return to Canada, once the IRCC makes a decision on their application.
The sponsored persons must also be at least 18 years old and pass the medical as well as security checks.
