Last year, Ontario nominated 9000 prospective immigrants under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). India and China were the two biggest source countries of these nominees. The original allocation for Ontario in 2021 was 8350. Later, additional 250 nominations were allocated to Ontario through the National Occupational Classification (NOC) Level C Pilot. In total, OINP nominated 9000 individuals in 2021, including the 250 applicants nominated through the NOC C Pilot.
In 2021, a total of 4332 candidates from India were nominated under the OINP and another 1736 candidates were nominated from China, which is the second highest number. Together, a total of 6068 candidates from India and China were nominated, around 67.4 per cent. The other major source countries are Nigeria, Pakistan and Brazil.
Demand for technology occupations in Canada
Also, a high number of nominations were issued by Ontario in technology-related occupations. Almost 25 per cent of all nominations went individuals with work experience in occupations including:
- Software engineers and designers
- Computer programmers
- Interactive media developers
- IT systems analysts
- Technology consultants
The nominees with work experience in a skilled trade constituted 15 per cent. More than 800 nominations were issued through Employer Job Offer: Foreign Worker and Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills streams. Among the skilled trades occupations, most number of nominations were issued for transport truck drivers, cooks, machinists and machining and tooling inspectors, carpenters, and bricklayers. Also, Ontario nominated more than 100 healthcare workers in 2021, including around 50 personal support workers.
