Canada will be spending $1.6 billion over six years, and $315 million during the one year after this period on the processing and settlement of new immigrants, who will be welcomed through the Immigration Levels Plan 2023-2025. As per the federal government’s Fall Economic Statement, $50 million has also been allocated for the current year and the next year for tackling the processing backlog. The information was revealed in the budget presented by Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland the other day.
Canada to welcome 1.45 million immigrants
As per the Immigration Levels Plan 2023-25 announced by Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, Canada will welcome 1.45 million immigrants in the coming three years. In 2025, Canada will welcome 500000 new immigrants and a majority of these immigrants would come through Economic Class immigration programs. It indicates the government’s commitment to help businesses tackle the labour shortage crisis.
Immigration key driver of Canada’s economic growth
While presenting the budget, Minister Freeland said, “Today’s Fall Economic Statement is focused on building an economy that works for everyone – an economy that creates good jobs and makes life more affordable for Canadians. Even as we face global headwinds, the investments we are making today will make Canada more sustainable and more prosperous for generations to come.”
The Budget further stated that immigration was core to the Canadian identity and a key driver of Canada’s economic growth. Immigrants arriving in Canada in the next three years will help to address persistent labour shortages including in healthcare, manufacturing and building trades, read the budget statement. “This builds on steps the government has already taken to respond to Canada’s labour market needs as part of the Express Entry system,” it added.
The budget also stated that the Canadian government will continue to invest in improving the processing capacity, with an aim to ensure that applications are processed quickly and backlogs are eliminated.
