Canada introduces changes to modernize immigration system

modernize immigration system

On September 1, Sean Fraser, the Immigration Minister of Canada, announced certain new measures to modernize the immigration system of the country. These measures are being introduced with an aim to improve the client experience and reduce application backlogs.  “As we look to strengthen our immigration system by updating our technology, people—our clients—must be at the centre of all that we do. By adding resources where they are needed, and leveraging technology to make processing faster and applying easier for our clients, we can give newcomers and new citizens the welcoming experience they deserve,” said Sean Fraser in a release.

Following are a few improvements that Canada is planning to introduce to the immigration system of the country.

Exemption from medical examination

In order to reduce wait times, Canada has decided exempt permanent and temporary residence applicants who are already residing in Canada from immigration medical exam. However, it has not yet been revealed when this new change would come into effect.  But the IRCC expects that it would benefit around 180000 newcomers.

Immigration applications to go 100% digital

The IRCC will begin the process of complete digitization of the immigration application system on September 23.

Application status trackers for more programs

By 2023, seven more permanent residence and temporary residence programs will have application status trackers. In February 2022, an application status tracker was launched for spousal, partner and dependent child sponsorship applicants. The status tracker for citizenship applications had been launched in May 2021. It will soon be expanded to include access to representatives.

The IRCC also has plans to publish estimates on how long it will take to process an application.

Canada is planning to welcome a record number of more than 431000 new permanent residents in 2022.  As in August, Canada already welcomed more than 300000 permanent residents.
