Canada is launching six new immigration programs targeting international graduates, essential workers and French speakers, informed Marco Mendicino, the country’s immigration minister. This year, a total of 90000 immigrants will be welcomed through three among these programs. The remaining three programs targeting French speakers will have no intake limits.
The programs targeting essential workers will give priority to temporary workers in hospitals and long-term care homes as well as those working on the frontlines of other essential sectors. The program for international graduates will target those who have completed their studies in Canadian post secondary education institutions.
From May 6 onwards, Canada will accept applications under three new streams. A total of 20000 applications will be accepted through the stream for temporary workers in health care. Another 30000 applications will be accepted through the stream for temporary workers in other selected essential occupations. A total of 40000 applications will be accepted through the stream for international graduates. The streams will remain open until November 5, 2021 or until they have reached their limit. Temporary workers in 40 healthcare occupations as well as 95 other essential jobs across various fields such as caregiving, food production and distribution may apply through these streams.
To be eligible to apply, workers must have at least one year of Canadian work experience in a health care profession or another targeted essential occupation. The international graduates must have completed their education within the last four years, not earlier than January 2017.
Besides, the applicants must have proficiency in one of the official languages of Canada and meet other general admissibility requirements. They must be present in Canada at the time of application, be authorized to work or working in Canada. They must also be residing in a province other than Quebec.
Why Canada needs more immigrants?
Canada is admitting more immigrants to the country despite the COVID-19 situation with an aim to address its demographic and economic needs. Canada is a country which has low birth rate and its population is aging fast. So, Canada is depending on immigration for a healthy population growth. Further, Canada is country with a strong economy and booming industry sectors like IT, healthcare and energy. To sustain the economic growth, Canada needs skilled workers who have the required skills and work experience. This is another reason why Canada is inviting more immigrants to the country.
