Dual citizens need Canadian passport
Dual Canadian citizens need a valid Canadian passport in order to travel to or transit through Canada by air, according to information from the Government of Canada. It means, as a dual citizen, you will have to carry both passports, the one that of your country and that of Canada, while travelling. Even if you need only the passport of your own country to enter and exit that country, you will need a valid Canadian passport to board the flight to Canada.
An electronic system of the Government of Canada will verify the travel documents of all passengers before they board a flight to Canada. This is an automatic process that happens when the travel documents are scanned during the check-in.
Why should you have a Canadian passport?
Canadian citizens, including dual Canadian citizens, must present an acceptable document to prove that they are Canadians. It means you must present a valid Canadian passport or a Canadian temporary passport, or a Canadian emergency travel document in order to board a flight to Canada.
A valid Canadian passport proves that you are a Canadian citizen and have the right to enter Canada without being subjected to immigration screening.
If you are an American-Canadian dual citizen with a valid U.S. passport, you don’t need a Canadian passport to fly to Canada. However, you will still need to carry proper identification and meet the basic requirements to enter Canada.
Special authorization
A person can apply for special authorization if, he or she has a flight to Canada that leaves in less than 10 days or has a valid passport from a visa-exempt country. He/she must also have received a certificate of Canadian citizenship or held a Canadian passport in the past or was granted Canadian citizenship after having been a permanent resident of Canada.
