Canada launches online portal to track spousal, child sponsorship applications

online portal to track spousal, child sponsorship applications

Canada has launched a new online portal that enables applicants for spousal and child sponsorship to track the status of their immigration applications. The tracker is only for the spousal, common-law and dependent child sponsorship applications. Applicants as well as representatives can view the application status on this portal.

The tracker was introduced as part of modernising the Canadian immigration system. The government media release on the launch of the tracker system read: “We understand that clients want easier access to status updates on their case files. That is why we will also introduce a new Permanent Residence Application Tracker in February 2022 for spouses and dependents, to allow clients to easily access their application information and status online.”

Canada government is planning to expand online application facility to more immigrants in 2022. This transition is expected to reduce delays in application processing caused by paper applications and the pandemic. In the release, Canada government further informed that their constant efforts have helped to bring back the service standards of 12 months of processing time for new spousal sponsorship applicants.

The 2021 budget of Canada has allocated $85 million to reduce the processing times of immigration applications. Further, in the mandate letter to Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also asked for taking efforts to reduce the processing times.

According to Fraser, around 147000 permanent residence applications will be processed in the first quarter of 2022.  A memo from the Canadian government had earlier informed that Canada would invite applicants from categories other than PNP in the Express Entry draws, only after bringing down the immigration application backlogs by the first half of this year. Currently Canada has a backlog of 1.8 million applications including citizenship applications as well as applications from temporary foreign workers, families, students, refugees, and visitors.
