Major global tech companies are eager to expand their presence to Canada, according to the Scoring Canadian Tech Talent report by CBRE for 2019. The report ranked Canadian cities on the basis of competitive advantages and appeal to tech workers and employers.
The report says that Canada is attracting both tech talent and companies at record rates. Global and domestic tech companies are finding major Canadian cities as attractive destinations. Within just five years from 2013 to 2018, the city of Toronto alone added 80,100 new tech jobs. In the entire country, the total number of new tech jobs added during the same period was 161,700.
Canada is the first choice for many major tech firms, especially the top US tech companies. They intentionally choose to expand in Canada compared to other US cities. A major factor that attracts global tech companies to Canada is the availability of tech talent. Deep pools of tech labour in Canadian cities and accommodative immigration policies have made Canada an abundant source of tech talent. Further, Canadian universities produce highly educated tech workers in specialized tech fields such as AI research and multimedia production. Canada facilitates substantial cost savings for global tech companies as high-quality tech skills are available at a less prohibitive cost, when accounting for the discounted Canadian dollar compared to US dollars.
CBRE research analyzed 20 leading cities of Canada and created a scorecard to rank their tech talent offering based on 13 metrics. The study found Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Waterloo Region and Montreal as the top Canadian tech talent markets in 2019. These destinations have the perfect settings for the tech talent companies to flourish, including high concentration of tech talent.
