Canada to spend more than $14 M to enhance newcomer settlement services in Prairie provinces

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will be investing more than $14.3 million for enhancing the settlement services for new immigrants in the three Prairie provinces of Canada, which are Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In August last year, Canada government had invited proposals under the Resettlement Assistance Program( RAP) and for case management services. From the proposals received, 14 projects for providing more settlement services to newcomers in the Prairies were selected. So now, the government has announced that those investments would include more than $10.1 million to extend case management services in 11 communities, in both English and French. This investment is aimed to help newcomers, especially those belonging to the vulnerable sections, to settle into the communities in the Prairie provinces.

Canada all set to welcome more number of newcomers

As per the Immigration Levels Plan of Canada for 2022-24, the country will be welcoming 431645 new permanent residents this year. The number would be 447055 next year and 451000 in 2024. The provinces of Canada are also gearing up to receive more number of immigrants in the coming years. Saskatchewan introduced the Labour Mobility and Fair Registration Practices Act recently, which is aimed to help the province’s population grow to 1.4 million in the next eight years. Currently, Saskatchewan has a population of 1.18 million. The legislation is also expected to create 100,000 jobs during these eight years.

Immigration to Prairie provinces increasing

In 2021, Alberta welcomed 40040 new permanent residents compared to 22955 in 2020. Immigration levels increased in Saskatchewan too, as 10955 new permanent residents moved to the province in 2021, as compared to 7400 in 2020. Manitoba welcomed 16585 new permanent residents in 2021, as compared to 8630 in 2020. So, the enhanced settlement services are part of the provinces’ attempts to attract even more immigrants to these regions.

Canadian provinces are undertaking enhanced measures to welcome more skilled immigrants to their regions.
