Quebec to welcome around 71000 new immigrants in 2022

Quebec welcomes new immigrants

It is estimated that Quebec would be welcoming around 71275 new permanent residents in 2022, as the province is taking serious efforts to compensate for the fall in immigration rates that happened owing to the COVID pandemic in the past two years. If Quebec meets this target, it will be 41.7 per cent more new immigrants compared to last year, when only 50285 new immigrants moved to Quebec.

Less number of Quebec migrants last year

Quebec’s original target for 2022 was just 52500 new immigrants as per the multi-year plan. But in 2020, Quebec could not admit 44000 new permanent residents, which it was allowed as per the then multi-year plan, owing to the pandemic. Only 25225 new permanent residents moved to Quebec that year.

So the number of new permanent residents who could not be admitted to Quebec in 2020, which is 18775, has now been added to the allotment for the province in the current year. So, in total, 20990 more new permanent residents would move to Quebec this year, than in 2021.

Government urged to increase migration to Quebec

Earlier this month, the business and industry groups had urged the provincial government to double the number of immigrants being admitted to the province in order to resolve the severe labour shortage crisis. They want Quebec to welcome at least 80000 new immigrants every year. Véronique Proulx, president of the Manufacturiers et Exportateurs du Québec (MEQ) manufacturing and exporting industry association opined that the number of new immigrants being welcomed by Quebec should be at least 90000 annually.

With Quebec provincial elections just around the corner, business groups are urging the government to find practical solutions for the labour shortage crisis. Quebec is one of the provinces in Canada that has severely been affected by the labour shortage crisis. Quebec has a separate immigration system that is different from Canada federal immigration system and those who wish to migrate to this Francophone province must meet a different set of criteria. Yet, places in Quebec such as Montreal remain to be the favourite destination for immigrants.
