Canada introduces Student Direct Stream (SDS)

With an aim to accelerate application process for international students from key Asian markets, Canada government has introduced the Student Direct Stream (SDS). The Student Direct Stream aims to reduce the processing time for student visa applications and allow more eligible students to study in the country.

The scheme is meant for students from the key Asian markets, which include India, China, Vietnam and the Philippines. In the future, Canada is likely to expand the scheme to Kenya and Senegal.

The Student Direct Stream replaces the Student Partnership Program (SPP) in India and other reinforcement programs for students from China, Vietnam and Philippines.

The Student Direct Stream facilitates a faster and more streamlined visa application process. The processing time will come down to 45 days, while regular study permit under SPP used to take 50 days to be processed.

SPP was limited to international students wishing to study in about 40 post-secondary Canadian institutions.  Bu Student Direct Stream is open for students who want to study in any Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) in Canada.

Qualifications required for Student Direct Stream (SDS)

In order to qualify for the Student Direct Stream, the student must have been accepted by a Designated Learning Institution of Canada. While applying, the student must submit proofs for being accepted by a Designated Learning Institution and the tuition fee paid for the year of study.

After the student applies for the Student Direct Stream with required documents, the application will be reviewed. If it meets the criteria to qualify for the Student Direct Stream, a letter of introduction will be sent to the student. The student will have to show this document to the immigration official once he/she arrives in Canada.

More Canada colleges become universities

Three Canada colleges have become universities recently, a phenomenon which is recurring in a country that gives highest priority to education. Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) in Alberta was awarded degree-granting status on February 22, while two other Canada colleges, Red Deer College (RDC) and Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD) became universities on March 1.

Canada colleges becoming universities is nothing new. A decade ago, two other Canada colleges in Alberta had become universities. While in British Columbia, five postsecondary institutions became universities in 2008. A few other colleges are also slated to become universities in the future. These include Yukon College, which is expected to become a university within two years, and Sheridan College in Ontario, which is likely to become a university in 2020.

Red Deer College, one of the prominent Canada colleges, had been making the efforts to become a university for around 30 years. RDC won university status arguing that if it became a university, it would make education more accessible and affordable in the region.  Grande Prairie Regional College was also awarded university status for the same reason. It is estimated that RDC would take at least three to five years to become a full-fledged university. While GPRC’s transition process will take eight years, it is expected.

Though ACAD had been awarding degrees for around the past 20 years, it had not been given the status of a university. Once ACAD becomes a university, the degrees awarded by the institution will gain more value. ACAD offers professional degrees including BFA, MFA and BD.

Apparently, the next step for these universities will be to apply for a membership in Universities Canada, an organization which represents 96 public and private not-for-profit Canadian universities.

Inflow of foreign students contributes towards record growth in Australian population

Reversing the ageing of population in Australia, the inflow of international students has positively contributed towards record population growth in the country, according to data from Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). As per their statistics, the number of international students flocking to the country is increasing, showing an eight percent rise compared to last year. The first two months of this year itself witnessed a 12 percent rise in new overseas enrollments in Australia compared to last year, exceeding 500000 in these two months. Most students have chosen eastern cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane as their study destinations.

Australia’s population has witnessed an overall growth of 1.6 per cent. About 54 percent of this increase was contributed by net overseas migration to capital cities. Foreign students comprise around 43 per cent of net overseas migration to Sydney and Melbourne. For the first time, Sydney has welcomed more than 100,000 new residents in a single year. In Melbourne, the population increase is by just over 125,000. In both cases, net overseas migration was the key contributor, accounting for 64 per cent of the population rise in Melbourne and 83 per cent in Sydney.

International education often makes the way for permanent residence and then citizenship for international students. This rise in young population help Australia resist the population decline, which is being faced by countries such as Japan. The international students are also adding to the multicultural profile of the country.
