Two members of the Liberal Party of Canada have urged the government to increase the level of immigration in order to meet Canada’s population and demographic challenges. Canada’s Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Navdeep Bains and his former chief of staff in 2016 and 2017, Elder C. Marques are of the opinion that Canada should become even more ambitious with its immigration targets. They revealed their point of view in an open letter published in The Financial Post. They further pointed out in their letter that raising immigration targets responsibly and effectively will require more investments in infrastructure, housing, transit and resettlement services across the entire country and that would require better federal-provincial collaboration. They also highlighted the need for attracting and retaining international talent, with a sharper focus on international students and temporary foreign workers.
During his tenure as a federal Cabinet minister, Bains worked closely with the Advisory Council on Economic Growth, a group which advocated raising Canada’s annual immigration target to 450000 people a year. He was also a senior advisor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and later chief of staff to the minister of finance in the Liberal Government.
Canada needs more immigrants
Businesses across Canada view immigration as a solution to the serious labour shortages being faced by the country. Immigration is currently a major driver of population growth in Canada, which has very low natural population growth. Currently close to 95 per cent of Canada’s population growth is attributed to immigration. As per the latest data, Canada welcomed 274980 new permanent residents in the first seven months of the current year. It indicates that Canada is well on track to welcome 471394 new permanent residents, a target it has set for 2022. This is 16.1 per cent more compared to 406,025 new permanent residents welcomed by Canada in 2021. If Canada meets its immigration target for 2022, it will be a new record in the history of Canada migration.
