Canada PR applications

Data from Statistics Canada has revealed that job vacancies were on rise in every Canadian province in the third quarter of 2018. Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia are the provinces that recorded the largest year-over-year increases in job vacancies in Canada during the three months from July 1 to September 30, 2018. Statistics Canada noted that this was the eighth consecutive quarter that witnessed an year-over-year increase in both the number of job vacancies and the job vacancy rate. The number of job vacancies Canada had during the quarter was 550,000. It means an increase of 83,000 compared to the same period in 2017.

Job vacancies in Canada: Quebec tops the list

In Quebec, job vacancies rose by 31,020 in the quarter. This marked an increase of 35.5 per cent compared to the same period in 2017. The sectors that posted the highest number of job vacancies were health care and social assistance, accommodation and food services and manufacturing.

Quebec also witnessed the second largest provincial increase in job vacancy rate after Prince Edward Island. The job vacancy rate rose by 0.7 percentage points to 3.2 per cent during the quarter. Quebec was a province that recorded the lowest job vacancy rates between 2015 and 2017. With more demand for labor, the rate is now close to the national average of 3.3%.

Another notable fact is that of the 10 Canadian economic regions that had the highest job vacancy growth rates during the period, seven were in Quebec. Top among them were Côte-Nord and Nord-du-Québec that recorded an year-over-year increase of 64.2 per cent.

Job vacancies in Canada: Increase in other provinces

Compared to the third quarter of 2017, Ontario had an increase of job vacancies by 22,465 (12.2 per cent). The sectors that posted the biggest increase in job vacancies in the province during the period were health care and social services.

In British Columbia, job vacancies increased by 17,950(19.4 per cent) compared to the same period during the previous year. The sector that posted the biggest increase in job vacancies was construction.

Meanwhile, Alberta reported an increase of 5100 job vacancies during the period,  a rise of 9.5 percent compared to the previous year. Healthcare and social assistance were the sectors that recorded the highest increase with 2000 more job openings compared to the third quarter of 2017. New Brunswick also posted an increase of 2,140 job vacancies during the period.

In this context, it has to be noted that Provincial Nominee Programs are playing a major role in helping provinces and territories to fill the increasing number of job vacancies. Though Quebec does not associate with Canada PNP, it has special arrangement with the Government of Canada that allows the province to select eligible foreign workers to immigrate to Quebec.
