Canada is one of the friendliest countries for immigrants, revealed the Migration Integration Policy Index (MIPEX) report of the Migration Policy Group. Canada and New Zealand have now replaced the earlier friendliest immigrant destinations such as Australia, UK and the United States.
The MIPEX ranked 52 countries from five continents on the basis of immigration policy performance. In 2020, Canada received a high score of 80, thus becoming the fourth best country with “comprehensive, immigrant-friendly policies that emphasize equal rights, opportunities and security for newcomers.” In 2015, Canada’s rank on the MIPEX was the sixth. Improvements in access to healthcare for asylum seekers as well as improvements to the 2017 Citizenship Act introduced by the Liberal Party government of Canada helped the country to add two points to its overall score.
The Migration Policy Group has observed that Canada’s anti-discrimination policies are its greatest strength. The country’s world-leading laws and policies such as the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and its national policies on multiculturalism helped the country earn the top score. Besides, the fact permanent residents can obtain citizenship and voting rights in Canada comparatively quicker earned a higher score for the country.
The MIPEX Report was prepared by the Migration Policy Group and the Barcelona Centre for International Affairs based of five years’ data till 2019. It is a comprehensive benchmark for integration policies used by policymakers, civil society, researchers and the media. The immigration policies of a country is important as it decides how easily newcomers can find jobs, grab education opportunities, develop an sense of belonging, grow to become citizens in a country.
Earlier, a Gallup survey of Canadian attitudes to immigrants had showed them to be the most welcoming country for immigrants. The major question in the survey to the respondents was what they thought about immigrants becoming their neighbours and marrying into their families. Majority of Canadians found these to be a good thing. The survey included people living in 145 countries. Canadians had the highest score, 8.46, showing them to be the most welcoming people in the world in terms of immigration.
