With an aim to expand the application processing capacity for family class immigration, Canada is expanding the Case Processing Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia. This move is with an aim to process more applications so that families can be reunited faster.
A media release issued by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada revealed that they will get new office space and 62 additional employees will be appointed. These employees will primarily work on processing applications for family class immigration to Canada. This will help Canada to reduce the processing time of applications and process more applications.
IRCC’s Case Processing Centre in Sydney currently has only 30 per cent of its capacity for occupancy, thanks to the restrictions imposed in the wake of coronavirus pandemic. With new office space, the Centre will be able to accommodate more employees and those who are returning to the office from the work-from-home setup.
Canada’s Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino expressed the hope that with the increased capacity, the Immigration Department of Canada would be able to return to the one-year standard for spousal applications. In his Tweet regarding the expansion, Marco Mendicino also pointed out that the move would create good local jobs for the natives of Cape Breton.
The Sydney Case Processing Centre handles different types of immigration applications. The applications processed under family class immigration include those for outland spousal, common-law, and conjugal sponsorship, dependent children, adopted children, and other relatives.

The Canada government gives prime importance to family reunification in its immigration policies. The Family Class Immigration of Canada allows citizens and permanent residents of Canada to help their family members immigrate to Canada permanently.
To be eligible to sponsor an family member for Canada immigration, a person must be:
- Either a permanent resident of citizen of Canada
- Be above the age of 18.
- Express the intention to continue living in Canada after the sponsored relative arrives in Canada.
- Have the financial capacity to support family members.
- Should not be bankrupt, incarcerated, or facing serious charges in court
