Bringing huge relief to immigrants who have their COPR approved after March 18, 2020, Canada’s Immigration Minister said that those with expiring Confirmation of Permanent Residency(COPR) documents will still be allowed to enter the country after the restrictions are eased.
Confirmation of Permanent Residency(COPR)
COPR is a document issued to immigrants who have their application for permanent residence in Canada approved. This document is signed and dated by an immigration officer or a CIC office when the permanent residence status is awarded to the immigrant. The immigrants require COPR to have access to services provided by provincial and territorial organizations.
Entry of immigrants with COPR approved after March 18
In an email to CTVnews.ca, the immigration officials said that the immigrants who had their COPR approved after March 18 will be eventually allowed to enter Canada, even if the document is expired. March 18, 2020 was the date when Canada introduced border restrictions in the wake of the spread of COVID-19. The immigration officials further told the CTVnews.ca that the COPRs of these candidates will be extended once they are allowed to enter Canada.
Candidates who have their COPR approved after March 18 have been urging the Canada government to enter the country. Politicians in Canada are also putting pressure on the government to relax the border restrictions for these immigrants.
Canada to welcome more immigrants in coming years
The border restrictions imposed by Canada have led to slowing down of the immigration process. In order to compensate the low number of immigrants admitted to the country in 2020, the country is planning to welcome more number of candidates in 2021 and the next few years. In the period between 2021 and 2023, Canada will be welcoming more than 1.2 million newcomers. While, 401000 new permanent residents will be admitted to Canada in 2021, in 2022, the number will be 411000 and in 2023, it will be 421000. Proving that the country is committed to this target, Canada welcomed nearly 25000 newcomers in January. In February 13, Canada conducted the largest Express Entry draw in history, which invited a total of 27,322 received invitations to apply for permanent residence.
