Canada welcomed 37780 new permanent residents to the country in August 2021, shows the latest data. This is the third consecutive month where Canada is admitting a high number of immigrants. In June, 36000 were admitted to the country and in July, the country admitted 40000 new immigrants.
Before the outbreak of the pandemic, Canada used to admit between 25000 and 35000 new immigrants every month. However, the immigration levels started to fall from April 2020 onwards as Canada implemented various COVID-19 public health measures. The conditions remained the same till June 2021. But with Canada introducing relaxations to public health measures, the immigration levels have gathered momentum again.
Between January and August 2021, Canada welcomed close to 222000 new immigrants. This year, the country will be welcoming at least 401000 new immigrants as per the Immigration Levels Plan for 2021-2023. In order to achieve this goal, Canada will have to admit 45000 candidates per month on an average for the rest of 2021.
However, data shows that Canada is likely to achieve this goal because of the following reasons.
In the first half of this year, precisely on February 13, Canada held the largest Express Entry draw in history, which invited 27332 Canadian Experience Class candidates to apply for permanent residence. The draw was nearly six times larger than the previously largest Express Entry draw.
The size of Express Entry draws remained high throughout the first half of 2021. The draws mainly targeted CEC candidates who would most likely be in Canada. So, their immigration process would not be disrupted because of the border restrictions.
In May 2021, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada launched six temporary immigration streams through which close to 90000 temporary residents in Canada could obtain permanent residence status.
Canada government believes that high levels of immigration are necessary to support the post-pandemic recovery of the country. With Canada lifting international travel restrictions, more new immigrants are likely to come to the country. In June, Canada allowed all approved permanent residents with necessary documentation to enter the country. In September, the flight ban on India, a leading source country for immigrants, was lifted.
It is highly likely that the immigration levels will remain high in the coming few years and so, this is the right time for those who plan to migrate to Canada to initiate the immigration process.
