Migration to regional areas of Australia is set to receive increased support from the government as per the updated Population Plan.
Australian cities like Sydney and Melbourne are popular for work and study opportunities among foreigners. With the recent announcement, foreign skilled workers and international students may now explore and settle easily in smaller cities and regional areas of Australia.
The updated Population Plan would enable the government to adopt new measures like giving incentives for migrants to move freely to regional areas. Also, building better rail and infrastructure connectivity between the regional areas and major cities would be considered to compliment the updated Population Plan. These measures also aim to decongest bigger cities of Australia and redistribute its population to regional areas with high living standards and work opportunities.

Australia can learn a great deal from Canada in attracting foreign immigrants to smaller cities and regional areas. Within two decades, Canada has been able to increase its regional population by nearly 25%, owing to liberal policies to facilitate regional immigration.
Some of the best smaller cities and regional areas in Australia include the capital city of Canberra, the whole of Northern Territory & South Australia. Adelaide which regularly features in Global Liveability Index may now be open to liberal immigration policies. Broome and Geraldton in Western Australia are less recognized yet may offer several work opportunities for foreign skilled workers. Other smaller cities in provinces like Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria offer lucrative work opportunities in industries like Manufacturing, Construction, Food & Beverages & also Education.
In a parallel development, Australia has also introduced new regional visas with PR pathways for foreigners to settle freely. These visas will replace the existing Subclass 489 visa and Subclass 187 (RSMS) visa categories with Subclass 491 & 494 temporary visas respectively. Additionally, Subclass 191 visa enables residents on Subclass 491 & 494 visas to apply for permanent residence (skilled regional) in Australia with effect from November 2022.
International students will also be benefited from regional migration as Australia has announced an additional one-year Australian visa with a post-study work permit for international graduates from regional institutions.
