Canada expands list of accepted vaccines; Children need not undergo COVID-19 test

COVID-19 test

Canada has expanded the list of accepted vaccines by including one more. Now travellers vaccinated with Medicago’s plant-based Covifenz vaccine can also travel to Canada. Astrazeneca’s COVISHIELD and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, the two most popular vaccines administered in India are already on the list of acceptable vaccines to travel to Canada.

The other accepted vaccines are:

  • Janssen/Johnson & Johnson
  • Moderna’s Spikevax
  • Novavax’s Nuvaxovid
  • Pfizer-BioNTech’s Comirnaty
  • Sinopharm’s BIBP
  • Sinovac’s CoronaVac

Vaccination for travelling to Canada

To be considered fully vaccinated, the travellers must have had at least two doses of one of the approved vaccines or a mix of two accepted doses or at least one dose of the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least two weeks before travelling to Canada. The travellers must also update their information on the ArriveCAN app at least 72 hours before arriving in Canada. The website of the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) warns that if the information is not updated, the travellers will have to undergo COVID-19 test and 14 days of quarantine regardless of their vaccination status. Failure to use the ArriveCAN app may also result in a fine of $5000.

Vaccination requirements for children travelling to Canada

Canada has also scrapped the requirement for pre-entry COVID-19 tests for children between the age of five to eleven, travelling to Canada. They are also exempt from quarantine, so there are no restrictions to their activities. It means they can attend school, camp or daycare, without having to wait for 14 days. However, the children are required to wear masks when they are in a public place, including school, for fourteen days after they arrive in Canada.

However, the children may still be required to undergo a COVID-19 test upon arriving to Canada if their parent is selected for the random test of travellers who arrive in Canada. The self-swab kit will be provided at the border and the selected candidates must use only this kit to complete the testing. The test kit comes with instructions, weblinks and telephone numbers. Children below the age of five are exempt from vaccination requirements, pre-entry testing, arrival testing and quarantine.
