Two Canadian provinces are taking some serious efforts to promote immigration of French speakers to these provinces. One among these provinces is Nova Scotia, which will be launching its new ‘francophone’ immigration action plan named ‘Growing Nova Scotia’s Francophone Population: An Action Plan for Success (2022-25)’ soon. It aims to attract speakers and learners of French language to the province. French language is the first language of more than 30000 people in Nova Scotia, as per the latest Census data. The province has revealed that it is aiming to meet or exceed federal government’s target for francophone immigrants, which is 4.4 percent of the annual immigration. Recently, Nova Scotia PNP had held Labour Market Priorities Stream draw, in which it invited 150 francophone Express Entry candidates to apply for provincial nomination.
Another province which is planning to increase francophone immigration is Quebec. The province is considering to launch a new immigration program, which would accelerate the path to permanent residence for francophone immigrants already living in Quebec. The program would target graduates from francophone CEGEP colleges and universities as well as temporary workers who have [already] lived in the province’ for some time.
Further, Quebec has launched Bill 96, with an aim to further preserve and strengthen French in the province. As per this bill immigrants must learn French within six months of coming to the province as most of the government services will be provided only in French.
