Canada all set to meet annual immigration target of 401000 newcomers

Canada Immigration

Canada is all set to meet its annual immigration target of 401000 newcomers in 2021, informed Marco Mendicino, Canada’s Immigration Minister. Canada welcomed 39500 new permanent residents in July. The number of permanent residents welcomed by Canada in June was 35700. Both are monthly records, said the minister. The total number of permanent residents welcomed by the country so far this year is 184000. In a telephone interview to CTV News, the minister said Canada was ahead of where they had expected at this point in the year. He also said the country was going to accelerate the pace of landing new permanent residents. The minister also said that they were hoping to add 411,000 new permanent residents next year. Owing to COVID-19 pandemic, Canada could welcome only 185000 new permanent residents in 2020, as against 341000 new permanent residents in 2019.

Why Canada welcome immigrants?

For Canada, immigration is a strategy for promoting the growth of Canadian economy. The country has set an annual target of about 1% of the country’s population of nearly 38 million. Canada has an aging population and a falling birth rate. So the country has to depend on immigrants to maintain a sustainable rate of population growth. Further, the country is also facing a shortage of skilled labourers, who can contribute towards the growth of the country’s economy. That is the reason why Canada is keen about welcoming skilled workers as immigrants to the country.

Why immigrate to Canada?

As far as the immigrants are concerned, high quality of life, free school education and healthcare, and numerous social security benefits such as pension and unemployment benefits are the factors that make Canada an attractive destination. Canada also offers better career opportunities and earnings especially for workers in the healthcare and IT sectors.

Canada scaling back border restrictions

In 2020, Canada had imposed restrictions on entry of international travellers to the country to prevent the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. Now Canada is scaling back these restrictions to increase the number of immigrants to the country. It is expected that more immigrants will be allowed to enter the country in the coming few months.
