Canada taking steps to make immigration smoother for healthcare professionals

Recently, Canada’s Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced a call for proposals to help the International Educated Healthcare Professionals(IEHPs) to work in the healthcare sector of Canada. The call for proposals was for helping to streamline and enabling IEHPs to gain skills, experience and local credentials so that the country could utilise their talents more effectively.pnp finderThe government will handle these proposals through the Foreign Credential Recognition Program(FCRP). It is a federal program which provides funding to governments and organizations to support the foreign credential recognition. Canada government has set aside $90 million for the chosen projects, through the FCRP program.

Eligibility for proposed projects

A project will be eligible to be selected if,

– It reduces obstacles to foreign credential recognition for healthcare workers by enhancing recognition processes, streamlining recognition stages and expanding access to field practice.

– Provide healthcare workers Canadian work experience for their respective employment fields. Along with that, support should also be provided to the participants such as childcare and transportation costs, mentoring as well as coaching

– Projects which facilitate labour mobility between Canadian jurisdictions for healthcare professionals and IEHPs. It will minimise structural and administrative barriers for healthcare workers who seek work in another jurisdiction

The projects must also either

-Develop testing and implementation of credential recognition systems with an emphasis on reducing regulatory processes and harmonizing occupational standards with an aim to increase international credential recognition and interprovincial labour mobility.

-Provide wage subsidies, job placements as well as mentorship to IEHPs with an aim to integrate them to the Canadian labour market.

The proposals for the projects will be accepted until January 30. Successful projects will receive a minimum funding of $500,000 and a maximum of $10 million.

Canada is facing a severe shortage of skilled workers in the healthcare sector. Even in this situation, health workers from abroad are finding it difficult to enter the workforce owing to the difficulties in integrating them to Canadian labour market. So the government is exploring ways to reduce the obstacles in integrating foreign skilled workers to Canadian labour market.
