It was recently that Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced a few important changes to the Super Visa program of the country. As per the new changes, the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who come to Canada on Canadian Super Visa, will be able to stay for a maximum of five years without having to renew their status.
The Super Visa applicants would also be able to buy medical insurance from international insurance companies. These changes would come into effect from July 4 onwards.
What is Canadian Super Visa?
The Canadian Super Visa is a multiple-entry visa that allows holders to enter Canada multiple times over period of 10 years. Currently, a super visa holder would be able to stay continuously in Canada only for a period of two years. To be eligible to apply for Canada super visa, a person must be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. They must also have received a signed letter of invitation from their children/grandchildren residing in Canada.
How will the changes benefit Indian immigrants?
Canada has a large Indian diaspora and India is the largest source country for permanent residents under Canada Express Entry program. The highest number of invitations to apply for permanent residence in Canada is also being received by Indians.
In 2020, a total of 50841 Indian citizens received the invitations to apply for permanent residence in Canada. It means 47 per cent of the total number of invitations issued during that period. In 2021, almost one lakh Indians became permanent residents in Canada.
As more and more Indians become permanent residents, any changes in policies that would help them reunite with their families would be a welcome change. So, the new changes to Canadian Super Visa have been exciting news for Indian immigrants in Canada.
