There has been a record level of increase in the number of healthcare job vacancies in Canada, revealed a report released by Statistics Canada. As per the report, there are 152,000 vacant positions within the healthcare and social assistance sector as in August 2022. Lack of enough staff has even compelled some hospitals in Canada to temporarily close their emergency rooms or reduce their services.

Canada depends heavily on the immigration system to fill vacant positions in the healthcare sector. Almost a quarter of registered nurses and 36% of physicians in the country are not Canadian born. However, foreign-trained healthcare professionals have been finding the professional licensing system of Canada difficult. In this context, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is taking some serious efforts to make it easier for foreign-trained healthcare workers become permanent residents in the country. One such move was removing some of the barriers of physicians, who are temporary residents in Canada, to immigrate.
Professional scientific and technical services sector jobs in Canada
Professional scientific and technical services sector witnessed a slight increase in payroll employment, as per the report. Payroll employment increased in this sector by 5200 in August. Most significant gains were reported by British Columbia, Ontario, Alberta and Quebec. The sectors which witnessed the highest level of payroll employment gains were computer systems design and related services as well as management, scientific and technical consulting services industries. Particularly, computer system design had the highest growth rate and recorded filling 65,900 positions since September 2021.
Statistics Canada report on jobs in Canada
Statistics Canada released its report on payroll employment, earnings and hours, and job vacancies for August 2022 recently. The report analyses data such as the number of employees in Canada’s workforce who are currently receiving wages, how much money they make and how many hours they work. Further, the report monitors job vacancies or positions, which have become vacant for any reason. As per the report, the number of vacant payroll employment positions in Canada last August was 958500.
