Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) is planning to nominate Ontario Technology Express Entry candidates with work experience in technology sector for permanent residence in Canada. Targeted draws for Ontario immigration will choose Express Entry candidates with work experience in one of the six tech-related occupations through its Human Capital Priorities (HCP) Stream.
Ontario immigration
The province of Ontario is the most popular destination for newcomers in Canada. Around 65% of the Express Entry candidates, who were admitted in 2018, had mentioned Ontario as their preferred destination.
Ontario immigration for tech workers
Canada, with a booming technology sector, has high demand for tech workers. It is expected that Canada’s tech sector would require up to 220,000 skilled workers by 2021. As any other province of Canada, Ontario is also facing a shortage of tech workers. The major tech hubs of Ontario are located in Toronto, Ottawa and Kitchener-Waterloo.
Ontario will look for tech workers in the Express Entry pool who meet the eligibility criteria through its Human Capital Priorities Stream. Candidates with work experience in one of the six following targeted occupations will be selected:
- Software engineers and designers (NOC 2173)
- Computer programmers and interactive media developers (NOC 2174)
- Computer engineers (NOC 2147)
- Web designers and developers (NOC 2175)
- Database analysts and data administrators (NOC 2172)
- Computer and information systems managers (NOC 0213)
Ontario selects targeted occupations based on the current needs of the province’s labour market after consulting with the employers and other stakeholders of the province. Candidates do not require a job offer to be invited through the Human Capital Priorities Stream of Ontario. Usually, candidates with a CRS score not high enough to be invited through Express Entry draws are invited through HCP. The candidates who receive a Notification of Interest from the OINP can apply for a provincial nomination from Ontario within 45 days.
Ontario immigration nominations
Each year, the federal government allocates a certain number of nominations for OINP. In the past six years, the number of nominations allocated to Ontario has witnessed a steady increase and the allocation for the current year is 6900. In the next two years too, admissions through PNPs are expected to grow further in Canada.
