The Government of Canada has completed sending invitations to apply for immigration under the Parents and Grandparents Program 2020. The process of inviting sponsors who had expressed interest to sponsor their parents and grandparents for migration to Canada in 2020 was completed over a period of 10 days. Those who have received the invitations may now submit the complete application for sponsoring their parents or grandparents within 60 calendar days.
In a press release, IRCC instructed those who have expressed an interest to sponsor to check their junk mail or their inbox to know if they have received an invitation. They may also check the status of their application on the IRCC website.
Parents and Grandparents Program 2021
The IRCC further informed that the 10,000 applicants who were invited had been selected randomly. Those who have not received the invitation may again submit an application in the 2021 Parents and Grandparents Program. In 2021, Canada is planning to invite 30000 candidates to apply for sponsoring their parents and grandparents for permanent residence in Canada. The candidates will be randomly selected.
According to the IRCC, PGP is a very popular immigration program and the number of those who wish to sponsor their parents and grandparents always exceeds the number of applications they can accept. Parents and grandparents who come to Canada under this program are granted permanent residence. They can also apply for Canadian citizenship later. Those who wish to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada may also consider Canada Super Visa that allows them to stay in Canada for up to two years.
Parents and Grandparents Program: Income requirements
Earlier, in the wake of COVID-19, Canada had brought down the income requirements for family class immigration that included the Parents and Grandparents Program. Now, the sponsor’s income must only meet the Minimum Necessary Income(MNI). Earlier, to be eligible, the sponsor’s income was required to be MNI plus 30 per cent.
The sponsor needs to sign an undertaking agreement saying that they would pay back any social assistance that the sponsored individuals claim. For sponsors outside Quebec, the undertaking period is 20 years. But for those in Quebec, it is 10 years.
Parents and Grandparents Program: Other requirements
The candidate must:
- Be of at least 18 years of age
- Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Must be living in Canada
- Must sign an undertaking stating that they would provide for the basic requirements of the sponsored person.
