The business groups in Canada are putting pressure on the federal government to bring out a comprehensive plan for reopening the economy and international borders. The government is yet to publish a plan for reopening international borders, especially for the travellers to Canada who are fully vaccinated.
Canada closed its borders for international travellers in March 2020. Though some exemptions were introduced, the restrictions were being renewed and now they have been extended until June 21.
Border reopening plan
Recently, Canada took part in the G7 Summit, which highlighted the need for setting some common standards for reopening the borders, including the recognition of the vaccination status.
As other countries have already come up with a plan for reopening the borders, the business leaders in Canada are urging the government to devise a comprehensive plan. The Hotel Association of Canada, in a media release, pointed out that without this plan, the tourism industry in the country and the livelihoods of many people were at stake. The business leaders think that fully vaccinated travellers must be allowed to travel to the country irrespective of their nationalities. They are demanding a single national policy approach on vaccination certification, international border and unvaccinated children.
COVID vaccination in Canada
Canada is top among the world countries in which a high number of people have received the first dose of the corona vaccine. As on June 5, around 70 percent of Canada’s population above the age of 12 has received at least the first dose of vaccine. Earlier this month, the COVID-19 Testing and Screening Expert Advisory Panel had advised Canada government to ease quarantine restrictions.
