Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has informed that the country would further relax border travel restriction for travellers from other countries in the coming weeks. However, he said that the relaxations would depend on “the vaccination rate, COVID situation in general, variants of concern and what’s happening elsewhere.”
Earlier on June 21, Canada had announced that fully vaccinated travellers who are exempt from border restrictions did not have to undergo 14 days of quarantine.
Bill Blair, Public Safety Minister of Canada, also had informed the media that Canada would reopen its borders fully when at least 75 per cent of the Canadians are fully vaccinated. According to him this would probably happen around July 21, when current border restrictions would expire.
COPR holders may now travel to Canada
Now, those who hold the Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) document are exempt from border restrictions in Canada. It means those who hold a valid COPR document may now travel to the country. However, this does not apply to aspiring immigrants whose COPR has expired. They will have to wait until Canada makes an announcement on how to renew the document.
Further, from July 5 onwards, the international travellers who are fully vaccinated need not quarantine for 14 days when they reach Canada. However, they need to take a COVID test before and after arriving in the country.
Exempted travellers
The following categories of travellers are exempted from border travel restriction in Canada:
- Canadian citizens
- Permanent residents
- Close family members of above two categories
- Valid COPR holders
- Temporary foreign workers
- International students
Ambitious Immigration Levels Plan of Canada
Canada has set an ambitious immigration target for the year 2021 and plans to welcome 401000 new permanent residents. Among the new immigrants who come to Canada every year, almost 20 percent are from India. So, Indian immigrants are crucial for Canada to meet its immigration targets and it is expected that the country would lift travel ban on India in July or by August.
