Canadian Citizenship: New Regulations
New regulations in the Canadian citizenship process that came into effect on October 11, 2017, will make the citizenship application process for permanent residents (PR) in Canada, easier and faster.
Canadian Citizenship Before
- If required, permanent residents had to file their income taxes for four out of six years to meet the physical presence requirement.
- The time an applicant spent in Canada before becoming a permanent resident did not count towards the physical presence requirements to become a citizen.
- Permanent residents had to be physically present in Canada for four out of six years to apply for citizenship.
- For four out of the six years preceding their application, permanent residents were required to be in Canada for 183 days.
- Permanent residents between the ages of 14 and 64 years had to meet the Canadian citizenship language and knowledge requirements.
Canadian Citizenship Now
- If required, permanent residents must file income taxes for three out of five years to meet the physical presence requirement.
- Permanent residents who have spent time in Canada as foreign workers, international students, or protected persons before becoming permanent residents can count half of that time towards the residency days requirement for citizenship.
- Permanent residents don’t have to meet the 183 days requirement.
- Permanent residents between the ages of 18 and 54 years must meet the Canadian citizenship language and knowledge requirements.
