Canada welcomed a historically high number of newcomers in the month of September. In total, 45000 new immigrants were admitted by Canada in the month, a historic number in terms of monthly admission of newcomers. Before the onset of the pandemic, Canada used to welcome only 25000 to 35000 on average every month. But after Canada introduced border restrictions in the wake of the pandemic, the admission of new immigrants came down to just 4000 in 2020. Though Canada’s annual immigration target was 34100, the country welcomed just 184000 new immigrants in that year, owing to the border restrictions.
So, in order to compensate for this drop, Canada almost doubled the annual target for 2021 at 401,000 new immigrants. So the number of new immigrants admitted started to increase and in June 2021, Canada welcomed 35000 new immigrants.
So far, Canada has admitted 267000 new immigrants. But for Canada to meet its annual immigration target of 401000 new immigrants, another 134000 new immigrants have to be admitted between October and December. It means 45000 new immigrants will have to be admitted in each of the coming months.
As part of its efforts to meet its ambitions immigration target for 2021, Canada held an Express Entry draw on February 13 that invited 27,332 Canadian Experience Class candidates to apply for permanent residence. Besides, Canada launched six temporary streams through which, 90000 candidates would be able to apply for permanent residence.
The border restrictions were scaled back in the recent months and in June, all confirmed permanent residence holders were allowed to enter the country. Ban on flights from India has also been lifted recently. With all these efforts ongoing, it is expected that Canada will indeed meet its annual immigration target for 2021.
Canada looks at immigration as a way to increase economic growth and effectively meet its demographic challenges. The natural population growth in the country is dismally low, which means the population is aging fast. This has also led to lack of enough skilled workers so it depends on immigration to promote a healthy population growth and ensure the availability of skilled workers.
