A meeting of the premiers of provinces and territories in Canada wanted the federal government to strengthen the Provincial Nominee Programs or PNPs. They wanted the government to give them more say in the recruitment of international students and other immigrants through Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). In a statement issued in the meeting the provinces said, ““Provinces and territories are best placed to ensure alignment between immigration and our local labour market needs.”
They wanted the federal government to ensure that the necessary federal resources are in place for the timely and efficient processing of applications from provincial nominees. Federal immigration policies should complement and respect the role of provinces and territories in economic immigration through Provincial and Territorial Nominee Programs, the statement added.
Canada PNP immigration
Canada Provincial Nominee Program was launched in the year 1998 with an aim to distribute the benefits of immigration evenly across the provinces and territories. It is the second most popular way to migrate to Canada as a skilled worker, after the Express Entry. Almost all the provinces and territories of Canada have Provincial Nominee Programs, which allow them to choose candidates based on their economic and labour market priorities.
Each PNP has at least one stream aligned to the federal Express Entry. When an Express Entry candidate is nominated by a province, they receive 600 additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score points. It guarantees them an invitation to apply for permanent residence in Canada, in a subsequent Express Entry draw. It means the PNPs give a chance to even those candidates whose Comprehensive Ranking System(CRS) score is low. Under the base streams, which means, those which are not aligned to the Express Entry, application for provincial nomination is submitted directly.
Once the candidate receives a provincial nomination, the federal government will process the application for permanent residence. In 2022, Canada will be admitting 83500 new immigrants through PNPs, as per the Immigration Levels Plan of Canada for 2022-2024.
