A total of 124,950 temporary residents including international graduates obtained Canada permanent residence visa in 2022, according to data released by Statistics Canada. These new permanent residents comprise those who had been holding study permit or work permit obtained under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) or the International Mobility Program (IMP). 
Temporary residents under these programs have an upper hand when they apply for permanent residence as they must have established roots in their communities during their stay in Canada. Because of this reason, they would be able to integrate into the labour force more easily. Further, during their time as temporary residents of Canada, they get a chance to improve their knowledge of English or French, the official languages of Canada. It also improves their chance of obtaining permanent residence in Canada.
International Mobility Program (IMP) of Canada
In 2022, a total of 97665 persons obtained permanent residence through International Mobility Program (IMP). The work permits issued under the IMP do not require Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Post-Graduation Work Permit is one such temporary work permit that falls under the IMP. In 2022, a total of 52725 Post-graduation Work Permit holders became permanent residents in Canada.
PGWP is issued to those international graduates who have completed their education in a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). The duration of the study program should be at least eight months. The validity period of the PGWP will depend on the duration of the study program completed by the candidate. The maximum validity will be three years.
Temporary Foreign Worker Program
A total of 7555 persons from the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) became permanent residents in 2022. Foreign Workers under the TFWP need to obtain an LMIA from the Employment and Social Development Canada in order to be able to work here. LMIA proves that hiring the foreign worker will have a positive or neutral impact on Canada’s labour force.
From Study Permit to PR visa
The number of those who transitioned from study permit holders to permanent residents is 19730. Normally, an international student becomes a permanent resident after obtaining the PGWP. But sometimes, study permit holders can directly transition into permanent residents, if they meet the eligibility criteria of an economic class pathway.
