Canada employment rates

Last month, Canada’s regained all of the jobs it had lost two months ago owing to the impact of COVID-19, shows the results of Labour Force Survey conducted by Statistics Canada.  The unemployment rates in the country were also the lowest during February, the survey found. The unemployment rates fell by 1.2 percentage points compared to the previous month, when it was 8.2 percent. The total working hours of the employees also increased by 1.4 per cent, driven by the progress in wholesale and retail trades.

Another positive change was that the employment rates rebounded in those industries which were badly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, including retail trade, accommodation and food services. The employment rates in information, culture and recreation industry also increased significantly in February.

The employment in professional, scientific and technical services rose 5.6 percent compared to the same period during last year, which means an increase of 5.6 percent. This indicates the largest year-over-year increase across all industries.  Most of these gains were observed in Ontario and British Columbia. A major reason for this increase is the fact that the industry can operate remotely and so, could remain open during lock-down.
Compared to February 2020, about 75000 more people are working in computer and information systems occupations in Canada, in both professional and technical types of jobs.
Population growth of the country is an important factor in determining the employment rates in the country. It is necessary for Canada to maintain a healthy population growth to ensure the progress of various economic sectors as well as the economy in general. As the natural population growth rate is dismally low in the country, the only way to ensure population growth is immigration. This is the reason why Canada is steadily increasing the number of immigrants admitted to the country every year.
The Canadian government is planning to welcoming 401,000 new immigrants in 2021. In January, Canada returned to its pre-pandemic immigration rates, which is a strong indication that the country is all set to meet its ambitious immigration levels target.
