Canada immigration: What to expect in 2021?

Canada Immigration 2021

The year 2020 started off as a promising year for Canada immigration. But the immigration system was severely impacted by the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic and it continues to be so even today. There has been a significant fall in the number of immigrants admitted to the country and travel restrictions still remain in place. Since the pandemic has not yet been brought under control, it remains to be seen how the Canada immigration system will perform in 2021.

COVID vaccine and Canada immigration

However, there are a few certainties, which are of benefit to prospective immigrants in 2021 and beyond. The emergence of vaccines is expected to lead towards the Canada immigration system returning to normalcy. Canada is planning to vaccinate all those who want to be vaccinated against COVID-19 by September 2021. Further, major source countries for Canada immigration, including India, have launched the procedures for approving the vaccines and starting the vaccination campaign for their citizens. In the future, Canada may take a decision to admit only those who are vaccinated against COVID-19 to the country.
Some policies adopted by Canada in 2020 in response to the spread of COVID-19 will continue in 2021 as well.  These include the 14-days quarantine rule which those coming to the country from abroad need to follow. Besides, those who are travelling to Canada also need to obtain a COVID-19 report three days before boarding the flight.

Committed to welcome more immigrants

One positive fact about the Canada immigration scenario is that the COVID-19 crisis has not affected the country’s commitment to welcome more immigrants, temporary foreign workers and international students.  Further, the country has increased its immigration targets for the next three years as, according to the Immigration Levels Plan for 2021-23, Canada will be admitting more than 400,000 candidates every year. This is the highest immigration level in the history of Canada. Canada expects that immigrants can contribute to the economic recovery of the country during the post-pandemic period in their roles as skilled workers, taxpayers, entrepreneur-job creators.
Canada continues to hold regular federal and provincial immigration draws. So, even if the country is not able to admit as many immigrants as it wants in 2021, it would be able to provide necessary approvals so that the immigrants can come to the country when the travel restrictions are lifted.
A clearer picture of Canada’s immigration scenario will emerge when Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issues mandate letters to cabinet members. The letter to Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino will outline the priorities of the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for the year.
