Job vacancies in Canada remained more than one million for the third consecutive month in June. In its report titled ‘Payroll Employment, Earnings and Hours, and Job Vacancies, June 2022’, Statistics Canada observed that more job vacancies were waiting to be filled in June this year.
Job vacancies increased by 3.2 per cent or 32200 jobs in the month and employers were actively recruiting for a total of 1037900 vacant positions. The number of job vacancies remained above one , million for the third consecutive month. Also, the total labour demand, which is the sum of filled and vacant positions, reached a record high of nearly 17.7 million in the year. It is 1.4 per cent or 238700 jobs higher than in May. It also marked an year-over-year increase of 9.4 percent or 1526000 jobs.
The highest number of job vacancies was in the service sector, which added 88000 jobs. Educational services added 26400 jobs, accommodation and food services added another 16600, professional, scientific and technical services added 8800 jobs followed by healthcare and social services in which 8400 new jobs were added.
A sector which experience severe staff shortage during the past few months is the healthcare sector, comprising hospitals, clinics, other healthcare and social assistance employers. Almost 149700 vacancies were reported in the healthcare sector in the month of June. Compared to same month last year, this was 40.8 per cent or 43400 positions higher.
