Canada announces relaxations to COVID-19 restrictions

relaxations to COVID-19

As Canada is fast recovering from the impact of the Omicron wave, the country has announced certain relaxations to COVID-19 restrictions. Starting from February 28 onwards, fully vaccinated travellers will be able to enter Canada with a pre-arrival antigen test. Furthermore, unvaccinated children travelling to Canada will no longer have to quarantine for 14 days. International flights to all Canadian airports will also be resumed on February 28. Canada has also informed that random international travellers who will be subjected to on-arrival test would not have to quarantine until the results are out.

COVID test requirements for travelling to Canada

However, it is mandatory that the pre-arrival antigen test is approved by the country from where the travellers are coming. It should be taken not more than 24 hours before arriving in Canada. However, rapid antigen tests taken at home will not be acceptable. The test should be administered by a laboratory, healthcare entity or tele-health service. Travellers can also use a PCR test taken within 72 hours before the arrival.

It is mandatory for the travellers to upload documents via the ArriveCAN app before entering Canada. But unvaccinated travellers need to be tested on arriving to Canada and quarantine for 14 days. They also need to take another test on day eight of the quarantine period.

Also, international flights to all Canadian airports will resume at the end of February. Canada will adjust its travel advisory from a level 3 to a level 2. It means the government will no longer recommend Canadians to avoid travel for non-essential purposes. If the hospitalization rates decline further, more restrictions will be eased.

The provincial governments in Canada are also rolling back COVID-19 measures. Manitoba will be lifting COVID-19 restrictions by mid-March. Besides provinces including Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan will also be rolling back restrictions soon.
