More international students becoming Canadian permanent residents

Canada Immigration

Canada is one of the most preferred international destinations for education for students from across the globe. As Canadian government views international students as promising source of labour, they are awarded additional weightage while assessing their eligibility for Permanent Residence. They also enjoy exclusive pathways to obtain provincial nomination.

According to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada(IRCC), the number of international students increased from 122700 in the year 2000 to 642500 in 2019. According to a report by Statistics Canada, three in 10 international students who came to Canada after 2000 became permanent residents within 10 years of receiving their first study permit. The report found that half of master’s degree students and six out of 10 among doctoral degree students became permanent residents during the same period.

There has also been a significant rise in the number of students of non-university post-secondary education, who became permanent residents in Canada later. The number of these students, who enrolled in Canadian institutions between 2010 and 2014 is more than double as compared to those enrolled between 2000 and 2004. This may be because it is easier to get admission for non-university post-secondary programs than university programs.

Among the international students who came to Canada between 2010 and 2014, almost half of the Indian students became permanent residents within five years. This is the highest, compared to any other country. A high number of students from Nigeria and Vietnam also became permanent residents within these years.

Almost 60 percent of the international students who work in Canada during or after their studies become permanent residents. Among them, those with high-paying jobs are also more likely to become permanent residents in the country.

What makes international students best candidates for Canada PR?

Young age, Canadian credentials and proficiency in English or French are some of the factors that make international students the best candidates for Canada immigration. Most of the international students are also likely to have earned Canadian work experience with the Post Graduate Work Permit Program. The Post Graduate Work Permit(PGWP) allows international students to work in Canada after their studies and gain valuable Canadian work experience. Those with at least one year of work experience in Canada and language proficiency may apply for permanent residence in Canada through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). At the same time, master’s and doctoral degree students with foreign work experience may apply for permanent residence directly, without having to gain Canadian work experience through PGWP.
