The year 2020 was a tumultuous year for Australia migration, owing to the outbreak of COVID-19. The pandemic severely affected the migration plans of many as well as the immigration levels of the country. Now what should those applying for Australian visa expect in 2021? Here are some major changes that are expected to take place in Australia immigration in the year 2021.
Australia Immigration
It is predicted that the migration program level would remain at 16000 in the 2020-2021 program year too. However, some changes may take place in the distribution of quota. The quota for family stream will increase from 47732 to 77300. Priority will be given to immigrants under Employer-Sponsored, Global Talent, Business Innovation and Investment Program visas as the country is planning to recruit more foreign skilled workers who are capable of contributing towards the country’s economic recovery in the post-pandemic period. Priority will also be given to onshore Australian visa applicants and partner visa applications, with an aim to encourage migration to Australia’s regional areas.

Australian visa Business Innovation and Investment Program

As Australia’s immigration program for 2021 mainly aims at the economic recovery of the country, the places for business, investment and innovation program have been raised to 13500. The Australia government is also planning to improve the Business Innovation and Investment Program from 1 July 2021. The application charges for the visa will be raised from July 1 onwards by 11.3 percent. Further, the requirements for the Business Innovation visa will be changed with an aim to attract those with proven business skills to the country. The applicants will be required to hold business and personal assets worth $1.25 million (up from $800,000) and have an annual turnover of $750,000 (up from $500,000).

Australian visa under Global Talent Independent program

Australia is planning to establish a Global Business and Talent Attraction Taskforce. The taskforce will attract international businesses and exceptional international talents who can contribute towards the post-pandemic economic recovery of Australia.

Australian Partner Visa

A major change for partner visa will take place is the English language requirement and all the applicants will have to pass the English language requirement test. However, the language requirement will not be applied to Subclass 300 Prospective Marriage visa, Subclass 309 Partner (Provisional- offshore) visa and Subclass 820 Partner (Provisional-onshore), but only for permanent subclass 801 or subclass 100. Alternatively, the applicant can attend 500 hours of English language classes through the Adult Migration English Program (AMEP). The sponsors of the partner visa are also required to show the same level of English language proficiency as the visa applicant.

Skilled Migration Occupation Lists

The changes to MLTSSL/STSOL are put off until further notice. Changes will not take place until the COVID-affected employment market has improved. This is planned for March 2021, but may be delayed further beyond the 2020-2021 financial year depending on the situation.
