Canada will open eight more airports for international flights starting from November 30. However, the passengers and the crew must be fully vaccinated if they want to depart from a Canadian airport.
Announcing the reopening of airports, Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said increased vaccination levels have allowed Canada to safely re-open additional Canadian airports to international passenger flights. He expressed hope that because of this measure, more travellers will have access to regional airports for their international travels this winter, even while continuing to support Government of Canada’s measured approach to reopening the country’s borders.
The eight airports that will be reopened in November 30 are:
- John’s International
- John C. Munro Hamilton International
- Region of Waterloo International
- Regina International
- Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker International
- Kelowna International
- Abbotsford International
- Victoria International
Currently, 10 airports accept international flights. They are:
- Halifax Stanfield International
- Québec City Jean Lesage International
- Montréal-Trudeau International
- Ottawa/Macdonald–Cartier International
- Toronto Pearson International
- Billy Bishop Toronto City Centre
- Winnipeg James/Armstrong Richardson International
- Edmonton International
- Calgary International
- Vancouver International
It is expected that even more airports would start welcoming international flights in the near future, upon recommendations from Health Canada. The reopening will be determined by coronavirus pandemic, demand as well as the operational capacity of the airports.
From October 30, the Government of Canada has given time till November 30 for international flight crew and those who want to travel abroad to get fully vaccinated. This rule is applicable to travellers above the age of 12. In Canada, all travellers who use federally regulated modes of transportation such as domestic and international flights from Canadian airports, VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer train passengers as well as cruise ship passengers are bound to be fully vaccinated.
However, there is some flexibility in rule for those international travellers who entered Canada before October 30. They will be allowed to leave the country till February 28 without being fully vaccinated. However, they will have to provide a negative COVID-19 test before travelling.
