The Atlantic Canadian province of Nova Scotia has revealed a new action plan for boosting its French-speaking population. The plan, titled Growing Nova Scotia’s Francophone Population-An Action Plan for Success(2022-25) was released the other day, at the start of Francophone Immigration Week. Speaking on the occasion, provincial Immigration Minister Jill Balser said, “The Acadian and francophone communities have been an essential part of our province’s identity and heritage for more than 400 years. Our new action plan demonstrates Nova Scotia’s commitment to increasing the number of French-speaking newcomers throughout the province and ensuring they have opportunities and supports to thrive.”
Major goals of Nova Scotia’s Action Plan for Francophone Immigration
The major goals of the Plan include:
- Increase community and partner engagement in francophone immigration
- Boost the promotion as well as attraction of francophone immigrants.
- Undertake population growth programs
- Boost retention and inclusion of immigrants through settlement services.
- Launch research and evaluation programs.
By launching this innovative program, Nova Scotia aims to meet Canada’s target of 4.4 per cent francophone immigration. Nova Scotia expects that growing their francophone population will open up significant cultural and economic opportunities across the province. It will also strengthen francophone communities and promote the growth of French language, according to Nova Scotia.
Nova Scotia Inviting 150 Francophone candidates
On the same day of launching the program, Nova Scotia announced that they were inviting 150 francophone candidates for immigration through the Labour Market Priorities Stream of Nova Scotia’s Provincial Nominee Program. The invited candidates are those who have an active Express Entry profile.
Nova Scotia is a high immigration target for the current year, which is around 5000 more immigrants compared to the previous year. It is expected that Nova Scotia would welcome a record number of 14062 candidates in 2022.
Canada Provincial Nominee Program
The Provincial Nominee Program is currently Canada’s leading admissions program for economic class immigrants. PNP allows provinces and territories in Canada to nominate candidates for permanent residence in Canada, based on their specific labour market and demographic requirements. Besides, almost all PNPs have at least one stream or category of immigration aligned to the federal Express Entry system. The Express Entry candidates who receive nomination will have 600 additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score points added to their total CRS score, which would guarantee them an invitation to apply for permanent residence in Canada, in a subsequent Express Entry draw.
