According to the latest data released by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the country welcomed 35260 new permanent in January 2022. This indicates that Canada is committed to meet the ambitious immigration target it has set for the current year, of welcoming 432000 new immigrants. The total number of immigrants admitted as permanent residents by Canada in 2021 was more than 405000. It was a record since it was for the first time 1913 Canada had been admitting more than 400000 new immigrants in a single year.
Among those immigrants who landed in Canada in January this year, 65 per cent became permanent residents through economic class immigration programs of Canada. Another 20 per cent landed through family class programs and 20 per cent were of refugee and humanitarian class.
The IRCC data also revealed that they were processing the applications of Federal Skilled Worker Program(FSWP) candidates at a higher rate. FSWP used to be the leading economic class immigration program till the onset of the pandemic. However, in 2021, the number of FSWP candidates invited in Express Entry draws dropped drastically. Instead, Canada focused on awarding permanent resident status qualified candidates among international students, temporary foreign workers and temporary residents. Otherwise it would have been difficult for Canada to meet the immigration targets with the operational difficulties caused by the pandemic. So, they were largely targeting Canadian Experience Class(CEC) and Provincial Nominee Program(PNP) candidates in the recent draws. However, since September 2021, the Express Entry draws have been exclusively targeting PNP candidates. A huge backlog of immigration applications was cited to be the reason for this. This has been creating a lot of concern among candidates from other categories, especially FSWP candidates.
But in the past few months, IRCC has processed a high number of FSWP applications. Between the middle of December 2021 and February 2022, more than 9000 FSWP applications were processed by the IRCC. It is expected that CEC candidates and FSTP candidates will also receive Express Entry invitations in the current year itself.
