Canada has 100+ immigration pathways. Which one is best for you?

immigration pathways

Canada currently has more than 104 economic immigration pathways which aim to welcome immigrants with a variety of skills and who can contribute towards the growth of country’s economy. The streams under the Canada immigration system can be widely divided into three categories, which are economic immigration, family class immigration and refugees.
A significant proportion of immigration to Canada takes place under the economic immigration streams. Economic immigrants include highly skilled workers who apply from abroad, highly skilled temporary workers as well as international students living in Canada.

Express Entry immigration

Under Express Entry immigration, eligible candidates may submit an Express Entry profile. There are three economic class immigration programs under Express Entry, which are the Federal Skilled Worker Class, Federal Skilled Trades Class and Canadian Experience Class. Each of the Express Entry profiles are assessed and ranked on the basis of Comprehensive Ranking System or CRS. The CRS takes into account various factors such as age, education, work experience and language proficiency among other factors.

Provincial Nominee Program

Provincial Nominee Program(PNP) is one of the major skilled immigration pathways and is second in terms of the number of candidates who receive permanent residence in Canada. Canada plans to admit more than 60,000 permanent residents through PNP. It allows Canadian provinces and territories to admit immigrants according to their individual labour market needs as well as diversification priorities. Most of the Canadian provinces and territories have at least one immigration stream aligned to the federal Express Entry. The Express Entry candidates who receive provincial nomination will have 600 additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score points added to their total CRS score, which increases their chances of obtaining an invitation to apply for provincial nomination in the Express Entry draws that are conducted regularly.
Despite the restrictions imposed in the wake of Coronavirus pandemic, provinces including British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island and Ontario conduct PNP draws and more than 2500 candidates have received invitations to apply for provincial nomination recently.
In 2020, Canada aims to welcome close to 200,000 economic immigrants through more than 100 economic immigration streams. Among these candidates, 90000 will be admitted through Express Entry and 65000 through PNPs.
