Canada Express Entry: What to expect in 2021?

Canada Express Entry

2020 was a year of uncertainty for Canada immigration. The COVID-19 pandemic affected the Canadian immigration system so severely and Canada ran short of meeting its immigration goals for the year. However, despite these challenges, Canada remained committed to increasing the immigration levels and changing immigration policies to achieve that end.
As per the Immigration Levels Plan of Canada for 2021-2023, the country would admit more than 1.2 million permanent residents in the next three years. While the target for 2021 is 401000, it will be increased to 411,000 in 2022 and 421,000 in 2023.

Expectations for Express Entry in 2021

As the immigration levels have been increased, the number of Express Entry immigrants has also increased. So it is expected that the Comprehensive Ranking System(CRS) score requirements would come down in the Express Entry draws of 2021. 2020 was a year when Canada set a new record of issuing the highest number of invitations through Express Entry. In January 2021 alone, 10000 ITAs were issued through Express Entry. When these applicants, along with their family members, are admitted to Canada, it would make a significant number.
In the wake of economic slowdown caused by the pandemic, Canada is planning to welcome more skilled immigrants to the country, with an aim to tap the potential of these immigrants for the economic recovery of the country. However, data shows that the number of new candidates for Canadian permanent residency has not increased significantly. In January 2020, the number of active Express Entry profiles registered with the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada(IRCC) was 141000. As in January 2021, the total number of active Express Entry profiles is 147000, which is comparatively a small increase. It means the CRS score requirements need to drop for Canada to meet the Express Entry targets.
