Certain new travel restrictions in Canada have been introduced for international travellers with an aim to control the spread of COVID-19 in the country. The new restrictions are being implemented in the wake of several Canadian provinces putting pressure on Canadian government for implementing tougher travel restrictions.

Next week onwards, international flights to Canada will only land in Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal and Toronto. The travellers who land in Canada need to take  COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test upon arrival. They must also stay in a hotel designated by the federal government at their own expense for three days, till the test results come. This will cost travellers $2000 Canadian dollars approximately. If the test result is negative, the travellers may go for home quarantine for a period of 14 days, that means three days at the hotel and eleven days at home. If the result is positive, they need to stay at a designated government facility.
Canada is acting extra cautious about the spread of Coronavirus from international travellers in the wake of more infectious variants of the virus emerging in the UK, S.Africa and Brazil.

Exemptions from travel restrictions in Canada

The restrictions are imposed with an aim to reduce non-essential travel. Certain groups of travellers including Canadian citizens, permanent residents, certain international students and family members of Canadians are exempt from such travel restrictions. But all international air traveller above the age of five need to submit a negative COVID-19 PCR test done within 72 hours of the traveller’s departure to Canada. The travellers must also undergo a 14-day quarantine period. The travellers must also prepare a quarantine plan before they arrive in Canada to specify where they would stay during the quarantine period and how daily essentials would be supplied to them. The travellers also need to use ArriveCAN app. Using this app, all travellers need to perform daily self-assessments to make sure that the quarantine process is completed as per the requirements. Canada is also undertaking an intensive COVID vaccination drive and it is expected that every resident of Canada would be able to receive vaccination by September 2021. According to statistics, only 2 per cent of COVID-19 cases in Canada are because of incoming travellers, which shows the effectiveness of travel restrictions.
