The Study and Stay Pilot program of the province of Nova Scotia will be extended to other Atlantic provinces of Canada, informed Ahmed Hussen, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. He announced this at a press conference held on February 20. Now the program will be extended to New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Study and Stay Pilot program helps international students secure a job in their respective fields of study and stay in the province even after they graduate. It is aimed at helping international students to become professionals by making them employment-ready through events, workshops and career mentorship. The program further aims to develop the linguistic and soft skills of the students and help them build professional networks. Moreover, the program provides assistance to international students obtain permanent residency in Canada through Provincial Nominee Programs or the Atlantic Immigration Pilot program, which has an exclusive category for international students.
Any international student studying at a college or university in Atlantic Canada can apply for this program. The decision to extend the pilot program to New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador came following the success of the program in Nova Scotia. The program will be adapted by each province according to the unique needs of their respective labour markets.
The Study and Stay Program compliments the Atlantic Growth Strategy, a regional economic development program that aims to attract and retain skilled workers in Atlantic Canada.
