Canada has decided to lift the ban on direct flights to India and the flights will be resumed on September 27, says a media release. However, as earlier, travellers will be required to follow the public health measures including testing requirements and quarantine.
Travel from India to Canada
Besides, travellers from India need to meet certain additional requirements, which are:
- They must submit proof of a negative COVID-19 molecular test from the approved Genestrings Laboratory at the Delhi airport, taken within 18 hours before boarding the flight to Canada. Their test results will be checked by the flight operators before the flight departs.
- They must have uploaded their information into the ArriveCAN app or website.
If any of the travellers fail to meet these requirements, they will not be allowed to board the flight.
As a first step, three direct flights from India will arrive in Canada on September 22, 2021. All the passengers will be tested for COVID-19 once they arrive in Canada to make sure that the new measures are working.
Requirements for international travellers to Canada
Even after the resumption of direct flights, those who come to Canada through an indirect route will have to obtain, within 72 hours of departure, a valid COVID-19 molecular test from a third country. Canada banned the direct flights from India in April, following an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in both countries.
Canada allowed fully vaccinated travellers to enter the country starting from September 7. In order to be exempted from quarantine once they arrive in Canada, the travellers need to submit a negative COVID-19 test result and a proof that they have been vaccinated with one of the vaccines approved by Canada. These are Astra Zeneca, Pfizer, Moderna and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson). The travellers must also keep a 14-day quarantine plan ready, if in case it is needed.
The travellers are also required to use the ArriveCAN mobile or web application for submitting their personal and travel information. They should not have any symptoms of COVID-19 virus and also provide a negative COVID-19 test. Upon arrival, they may be selected at random to conduct a COVID-19 test.
The travellers who are not fully vaccinated will be allowed to travel only for non-essential reasons such as work, family reunification, school, compassionate reasons or immigration. Canadian citizens, permanent residents and their families may also travel to Canada even if they are not fully vaccinated, but they will have to quarantine at home. Children under the age of 12 who accompany their fully vaccinated parents or guardians will be allowed to enter Canada and need not follow the quarantine rules.
