A survey conducted by Environics Institute has revealed that majority of Canadians are happy with the current immigration levels, despite the impact of the pandemic. The Institute conducted telephone interviews with a total of 2000 Canadians between September 7 and 23, 2021 to find out whether their views on immigration had changed over the past one year. The survey found that the views of Canadians on immigration remained mostly stable over the past 12 months.
The survey found that a clear majority of Canadians supported current levels of immigration and they think immigrants are good for the Canadian economy. They also believe that immigrants are important for building Canada’s population.
The survey results are being released at a time when Canada is recovering from the impact of COVID-19. The aim of the survey was to find out how the challenges and stresses of the past year had affected “Canadian’s capacity for openness to others.”
As per the Immigration Levels Plan of Canada for 2021-23, the country will be welcoming 401000 new immigrants in 2021. Almost 65 per cent of the Canadians who took part in the survey did not agree to the statement that the current immigration levels are too high. Among the supporters of the Liberal Party, 75 per cent think that current immigration levels are not too high. Almost 81 per cent of New Democratic Party supporters also think the same. The percentage of Conservative Party supporters who think that immigration levels are adequate is 54. Among the Bloc Québécois supporters, the percentage is 70.
Immigration necessary for Canada’s population growth
A total of 57 per cent of the participants in the survey think that Canada needs more immigrants to increase population. Canada has low natural birth rate and the population of the country is aging fast. Besides, a large number of workers from the Baby Boomer generation will be retiring from work in the next few years. So Canada needs more young immigrant workers to ensure a steady supply of skilled labour force.
Immigration indispensible for Canada’s economic growth
Immigration is necessary for Canada to sustain the growth of its economy. Eighty per cent of Canadians agree with this statement. Young immigrant workers contribute to economic growth in many ways. They offer their skilled labour, which is essential for the growth of industries; they pay taxes and are likely to spend more. Besides 76 per cent are of the opinion that Canada government must attract more immigrant entrepreneurs to the country.
In conclusion, the trend of openness to immigrants continues despite the pandemic. It proves that the inherent qualities of the Canadian society like multiculturalism, inclusion and acceptance of newcomers still remain the same. The survey shows that Canadians never see immigration as a major problem in the country.
