India is one of the major source countries for immigration to Canada. But now, Canada has banned travel from India owing to the high number of COVID cases and the presence of variants in the country. Though this has cast a shadow on the plans of prospective Canada immigrants from the country, it is expected that the travel ban will be lifted soon. Experts predict that Canada would lift travel ban on India in July or August as the country is in the process of relaxing travel restrictions to facilitate the entry of immigrant workers and tourists, which is crucial for the revival of the Canadian economy.
Each year, Indians constitute almost 20 percent of the new immigrants to Canada. With an ambitious immigration target of 401000, new immigrants from India will be crucial for Canada. So it is believed that immigrants from India will soon be able to travel to the country. Besides, Indian students constitute a major portion of students in Canadian higher education institutions. At present almost 30 percent of the international students in Canada are Indians. So it is expected that Canada will open its borders for Indians by August, when most of the new international students who have enrolled in the September intake enter the country.
Recent relaxations to Canada travel restrictions
Recently, those who hold a Confirmation of Permanent Residence(COPR) were added to the list of those who are exempted from travel restrictions. However, those who have an expired travel document will have to wait for Canada to make an announcement regarding the renewal of the expired COPRs.
Further, the exempted travellers who are fully vaccinated need not quarantine for 14 days once they arrive in Canada. However, they have to take a COVID test before and after they travel to Canada and the result should be negative. The travellers exempted from restrictions include Canadian citizens, permanent residents, their family members, valid COPR holders and some categories of temporary workers. International students may also travel to Canada provided the institution they attend has a COVID-19 readiness plan.
Canada’s decisions to relax the COVID restrictions will depend on various factors such as the percentage of the population who have received the vaccine as well as the rising cases of COVID-19 variants. Recently, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, Bill Blair informed that Canada will reopen its borders fully when at least 75 percent of its population is fully vaccinated.
