Even has the United States has announced the suspension of all temporary and permanent visas for the rest of the year, Canada is keeping its doors open for talents from across the globe. In a television interview, Canadian immigration minister Marco Mendicino reiterated Canada’s commitment to welcoming immigrants, foreign workers and international students. “Come to Canada,” he told potential immigrants on his television interview. Mendicino further expressed the hope that immigration will spring the economic recovery of Canada. “We have a plan in place that looks to leverage the best and the brightest from around the world. We’ve got pathways like the Express Entry program, and the Global Talent Stream, which will help to bring entrepreneurs, engineers, and innovators. We’ve also got pathways for manual laborers and skilled laborers,” said in the interview.
Recently, US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order to the effect of preventing the entry of new green card holders and temporary foreign workers to the US in 2020. According to the President, the move would help American workers who have lost jobs owing to COVID-19 pandemic.
Though the pandemic has affected the Canada economy too, the country is still welcoming new immigrants through its various immigration programs. Canada has more than 100 temporary and permanent residence visa programs altogether. Several Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Program draws have been held even after Canada imposed travel restrictions in the wake of coronavirus pandemic on March 18.
The country, with an aging population and low birthrate, is highly reliant on immigrants to sustain a healthy population growth and economic progress. Canada had set an annual immigration target if 341000 for the year 2020. Though the country may not meet this target, they are keen on welcoming global talents to settle in the country.
